Do I need a car in Waikiki?
If you’re planning to do most of your activities in Waikiki or the Ala Moana area, you won’t need to rent a car for your trip. Waikiki hotels are within walking distance of beaches, restaurants, retail stores, and activities/attractions. The Royal Hawaiian Center, Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Aquarium, and Kapiolani Park are all within a half-mile radius of each other. For the times you may want to travel beyond, there are alternatives to car rentals like Hui Car Share, Biki bike rental, TheBus, and the Waikiki Trolley that will provide you a better experience getting around town.

If you want to expand your experience, then it’s a good choice to rent a car. The best part of having a car is being able to break away from tour groups and scheduled itineraries so that you can set your own pace around the island. How long does it take to drive from Waikiki to the North Shore?
By driving: When the roads are empty, it takes roughly 37 minutes to drive from Waikiki to the North Shore. You should expect moderate traffic and you should give yourself at least 60 minutes to get to your destination.
By TheBus: It will take roughly two hours to get to the North Shore via TheBus. Route 52 and Route 55 will take you there. Route 52 travels clockwise around the island (through Central Oahu) whereas Route 55 travels counterclockwise (through East Oahu).
Is there Uber or Lyft in Hawaii?
Yes. Uber and Lyft provide ride sharing services all over Oahu. To request an Uber pickup from Honolulu International Airport, you must go to designated pickup spots. The bus stops are stationed on the median strip outside of the check-in counters on the 2nd floor. A one-way ticket for an adult passenger costs $2.75 and $1.75 for a youth passenger.
